Week Critique: April 22–28, 2019

Inaugural Week Critique
Since I don’t blog often, I’m going to try a post every week that summarizes highlights from the past week. I’ll probably be woefully inconsistent and unfocused, but it’s a simple goal that is interesting to me. Perhaps I will gradually create more of a format or template to follow. For now I’ll just get something down to start. Here goes.

Proofreading
Over the weekend and into Tuesday I had the opportunity to help with a proofreading project on the Conflict of the Ages series that the Adventist design firm Types & Symbols is publishing (called The Conflict Beautiful). That was a valuable learning experience for me: using InCopy, Notion, and Slack; communicating with Tim Lale, who has a lot of editorial experience; getting some actual proofreading experience that felt legit. One other thing I took away was the power in EGW’s writing. I was proofing just a few chapters in “Patriarchs and Prophets” and there was much to glean. I really must read through her books seriously, and sooner rather than later.

TV…
Unfortunately, when I was done with that project I largely resorted to lethargy again. I’m not proud of this, but that included watching a fair amount of TV. I’d rather not talk about TV and movies here because I don’t like endorsing them, but in fairness to who I am today, I did enjoy “The Passage” (vampires!) and “Runaways” (teen “super heroes,” of a sort, in conflict with their “super villain” parents). The shows were better than I expected. Don’t watch them. Do better than me.

Be Disciples
On Sabbath, a day that is largely a low point for me, one redeeming aspect was watching Pastor Roberts’s sermon, the finale of his Easter week series. He addressed the question “What now?” After learning or reviewing the story of redemption, what do we do now? His response was excellent. He pointed out that Jesus said “Follow me” and then “Go and make disciples.” And Roberts explained those commands in a simple way I’d never heard before. I can’t do the same explaining here, but it’s a sermon I saved and will probably watch again. He just made it feel attainable and good.

Running Mount Pisgah
Today, after cheering my friend David on at the Possabilities triathlon, I ran with my running friend, Bjorn, in Wildwood Canyon State Park. We ascended a trail to Mount Pisgah and on the way down a different way put the hammer down for a couple miles of steep fire road descent. I averaged 5:13/mi and it felt good.

The end.
